Ciutat Flamenco is a festival that owes its existence to Barcelona's relationship with flamenco. Expressed clearly: the evolution of this musical genre would not have been the same without Barcelona. In this city there have been unique historical events that have affected the history of flamenco. The best artists have performed in Barcelona and great flamenco singers, guitarists and dancers have been born. In addition, throughout the year, Barcelona offers a large number of shows of this musical genre. In fact, few cities in the world program as much flamenco as Barcelona.
Since it began in 1993 under the name of Flamenco Ciutat Vella, Ciutat Flamenco has managed to establish itself as an unmissable event for lovers of the genre, both for those who are looking for established artists in its program and for those who need to discover the new talents that are beginning to set trends.
Within the framework of the festival, the Congress of Flamencology and Flamenco Pedagogy and a dance contest are held.
Ciutat Flamenco is organized by Taller de Músics.
About the 2023 edition of Ciutat Flamenco
The Ciutat Flamenco festival will take place this year in different venues in Barcelona such as L'Auditori, Apolo, Luz de Gas, Paral-lel 62, Centre Artesà Tradicionàrius, Golem's, Casa Seat, Escuela José de la Vega, Tablao Flamenco Cordobés, Tarantos, Tablao de Carmen and Librería Byron. This edition, the 30th, will be dedicated to the memory of Julián Navarro "El Califa", an essential guitarist to understand current flamenco in Catalonia, who accompanied such important artists as Miguel Poveda and Mayte Martín. The 30th edition will open with the I Concurso de Baile Ciutat Flamenco, which will be dedicated to Carmen Amaya in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of her death. The contest will take place on Friday, October 20 in the auditorium of the José de la Vega School.
Another of the novelties of this edition is the family concert "¿Cómo me las maravillaría yo?" by Flamencas Fantásticas. This is a participatory and dynamic proposal, full of color and enthusiasm, where people dance, sing, draw and share their passion for flamenco.
Ángel Rojas, Laura Santos, Pau Figueres, Patricia Guerrero, Libérica or Sergio de Lope will be some of the scheduled shows. Another outstanding concert will be the Gipsy Concert, a tribute to the homonymous work written by Enrique Cofiner and Sabicas in the 70s, which will be produced by the festival together with ESMUC and L'Auditori.
The week before and after the festival, a series of concerts will be held as part of the first edition of OFF Ciutat Flamenco.
Congress of Flamencology and Flamenco Pedagogy
Flamenco is not only played, sung and danced, but also researched, written and taught. This idea is what the International Congress of Flamencology and Flamenco Pedagogy of Ciutat Flamenco intends to reflect. In this year's edition the congress will address issues related to pedagogy and musical transcription on flamenco. It will be held at Casa Seat on October 27 and 28, and Paula Domínguez will perform, presenting her first solo album Bendita ilusión (Kzoo Music, 2023).
Notes on Taller de Músics
The Taller de Músics is an institution of national and international reference in the world of popular music education. They offer students a creative, dynamic and innovative environment that allows them to learn and develop a musical career oriented to any style and adjusted to any level. They pursue two main objectives: to offer a solid and complete training, and to adapt the educational lines to the reality of the moment to provide a training that facilitates the insertion of their students in the labor market. But the Taller de Músics is much more, as it develops numerous activities aimed at the promotion and dissemination of music. This line of action is where initiatives such as Ciutat Flamenco come in.
