One of the first works of the Contemporary Art Collection ”la Caixa” Foundation that was acquired in 1985 and permanently installed in CaixaForum Barcelona in 2002. "It is counted behind the bone - Space of pain" (hinter dem Knochen wird gezählt - Schmerzraum ) is one of the latest productions of Joseph Beuys, artist of the second half of the twentieth century essential for the development of current art.
Joseph Beuys (Krefeld, 1921 - Düsseldorf, 1986) based his work on the idea of the universal power of human creation and the conviction that art can provoke revolutionary changes. "Every human being is a potential artist," he said. Beuys coined the concept of "expanded art", seeking the integration of art and life so that the individual lived in harmony with the social and natural environment.
The installation Hinter dem Knochen wird gezählt - Schmerzraum was presented in 1983 at the Konrad Fischer gallery in Düsseldorf. Beuys completely transformed the gallery by covering the walls in lead and placing a light bulb on the ceiling and two rings of slightly different sizes. Schmerzraum symbolizes the exploration of metaphorical connections between natural phenomena and philosophical systems. Another of the possible readings of this installation is that it alludes to the biography of the people, to the period of time elapsed between birth and death.
