From November 8 to 17 will be held a new edition of Science Week, which, as usual, will be held in Barcelona and other areas of Catalonia. The Science Week will include numerous science outreach activities: open days and guided tours, virtual activities, exhibitions, talks, games, scientific workshops, films, educational tours, presentations and much more. Science Week is an event aimed at all audiences, and its main objective is to bring science and technology to the public and encourage scientific vocations among young people.
About the 2024 edition of Science Week
The main theme of this year's edition will be ethics in science and technology. Scientific discoveries and technological innovations have an enormous impact on society. This circumstance raises the need to consider the ethical limits of research and its application in areas such as biotechnology, artificial intelligence or the use of natural resources such as energy or water.
In addition, SC24 will address other relevant topics, such as the centenary of the birth of Jean Valentine, a code breaker who worked at Bletchley Park during World War II to intercept German communications. The centenary of Oriol de Bolòs, a Catalan botanist who introduced the sigmatist methodology in the study of vegetation in Catalonia, and that of Maria von Wedemeyer, an American computer scientist who played a key role in the development of emulation capabilities in computing, will be added to this centenary. The 100th anniversary of the birth of Bette Nesmith Graham, typist and inventor of Liquid Paper, and the 100th anniversary of Edwin Hubble' s discovery of the Andromeda galaxy, demonstrating that the Milky Way was not the only one in the universe, are also commemorated. In addition, the bicentenary of the birth of William Thomson, known as Lord Kelvin, is celebrated for his important contributions to thermodynamics and the creation of the thermometric scale that bears his name. Finally, it is the 100th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Physics to Kai Manne Siegbahn for his research in X-ray spectroscopy and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Willem Einthoven for his discovery of the functioning of the electrocardiogram.
Science Week is an initiative of the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation.
