The Teatre Apolo in Barcelona will premiere, from April 2 to 19, the theatrical adaptation of A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness. The play, which seeks to bring young people closer to the world of cancer with an emotional and lively story, will be staged by the Madrid company LaJoven.
The production has been recognized with five nominations in the Max Awards in the categories of Best Show, Direction, Music, Scenic Design and Videoscene, and Production. The story, which was born as a novel in 2011, had a film adaptation in 2016, directed by J.A. Bayona, and in 2018 came to the theater in London.
Under the direction of José Luis Arellano, the piece combines the social and the cultural, paying homage to the healing power of stories. The plot follows Connor, a thirteen-year-old boy who faces his mother's illness and finds support in a monster that emerges from a yew tree in his garden.
The cast is led by Elisa Hipólito as Connor and Eduardo Aguirre de Cárcer as the monster. The play deals with themes such as cancer, loneliness, bullying, empathy and the importance of facing the truth.
The staging is supported by a visual and sound language based on the adolescent imaginary, mystery and adventure. It also has the collaboration of the Spanish Association Against Cancer, within the initiative Todos Contra el Cáncer (All Against Cancer).
