This exhibition is part of the projects that the National Museum dedicates in 2021 to the theme of the Civil War, and art, conflict and memory. Aeronáutica [Flight] Interior is a work by the artist Francesc Torres, who has installed two 1:1 scale airplanes in the Oval Room. They are exact replicas of two models of airplanes that participated in the Spanish Civil War.
In this project, Francesc Torres explores the ambiguity between art and non-art. The origin of Aeronáutica [flight] interior was the artist's visit to the historic La Sènia Airfield. Nearby is the La Sènia Historical Aviation Center and its two most significant aircraft: the Soviet bomber Tupolev SB-2 "Katiuska" and the also Soviet fighter Polikarpov I-16 "Mosca", both aircraft present in the Spanish Civil War. . In the exhibition, as we mentioned, the airplanes are faithful replicas on a real scale. However, it is about airplanes that do not fly, and in the words of the artist himself “an airplane that does not fly is not an airplane, it is a work of art”. Torres also explores in his installation aspects such as the impact that the war from heaven had on the war conflict or the idea of sacrifice, which he relates to works in the museum's historical collection.
