The Antiquarian and Modern Second-hand Book Fair of Barcelona began in 1952 and is the oldest of its kind in Europe . The offer available to the public is very large, with prices to suit all budgets, allowing anyone to acquire books to enrich, complement or start their own personal collection. In addition, the Gremi de Llibreters de Vell de Catalunya (organizer of the event), plays a fundamental role throughout the year and stands out even more during the fair. Its direct work from the cultural sphere contributes to the circular economy, revitalizing the value of bibliographic heritage and prolonging its useful life far beyond what usually happens in traditional bookstores, where novelty books have an ephemeral life. In addition, this work promotes values such as reuse, preservation of historical memory and solidarity.
The fair is an important meeting for book lovers, collectors and professionals in the sector, standing out as the oldest of its kind in Europe.
About the 2024 edition
From September 20 to October 6, the 73rd edition of the Antiquarian and Modern Second-hand Book Fair will be held on Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona. This cultural event, which brings together 27 bookstores from all over Catalonia, offers a varied selection of antique, second-hand, out-of-print and rare editions, from the 16th century to the present day. Books for all tastes and pockets, from classics and contemporary to first editions and rare manuscripts.
The Antiquarian and Modern Second-hand Book Fair will extend over 190 meters along Passeig de Gracia, between Consell de Cent and Gran Via, near the Joan Brossa Book Monument, created in 1994.
The fair will begin with an opening ceremony that will include the opening speech by Dolors Udina, a prominent Catalan translator, recognized for her work with international authors such as Joseph Roth and Philip Roth. Udina has been awarded, among others, the National Award for the Work of a Translator in 2019. In addition, tribute will be paid to the poet Joan Salvat Papasseit with the exhibition "Salvat-Papasseit, Llibreter", which explores his work and legacy through bibliographic materials and personal objects. Jordi Boixaderas, renowned actor and dubbing artist, will participate in the event with the reading of a poem by Salvat-Papasseit, supporting the promotion of Catalan culture.
