The Catalan Book Week began in 1983 with the aim of promoting books in Catalan and becoming a meeting point for readers, publishers and bookstores. Since then, the Week has not stopped growing to become a cultural event of reference in Catalonia.
The Week has the participation of publishers, distributors, bookstores and libraries, and during the days it is celebrated, new literary novelties, publishing collections, magazines, and various activities are organized: talks on various topics, book presentations, poetry, concerts, family activities, book signings and literary itineraries.
The 42nd edition of the Catalan Book Week (2024)
The 42nd edition of the Setmana del Llibre en Català will be held in 2024 on Passeig de Lluís Companys, due to the fact that the Moll de la Fusta will be occupied by the America's Cup. The event will coincide with the Mercè festivities, and is expected to return to its usual location at the Moll de la Fusta in 2025.
The official opening of the Setmana will take place on Saturday, September 21 at 12:00 noon, with a show featuring books for young people through a combination of rap and instrumental music. The fair will feature 298 exhibitors, including 195 publishers, 24 bookstores, one distributor, 13 universities and 11 institutions from the Catalan-speaking regions. Visitors will be able to enjoy a wide variety of activities and approximately 100 literary novelties in Catalan will be presented.
During the fair, 300 activities will take place, including round tables, concerts and more. Three mornings will be dedicated to specific themes: September 25 will focus on libraries, September 26 on Òmnium Cultural, and September 27 on the Setmana Social for students who have little contact with books in Catalan. Among the featured authors will be Mercè Ibarz and Eva Baltasar, and the 50th anniversary of "Mecanoscrit del segon origen" will be commemorated .
The closing of the Setmana will be in charge of Judit Martín, with a literary improvisation show. The Difusió 2024 Prize will be awarded to Marc Girófor his promotion of reading in Catalan, and the Trajectòria 2024 Prize to Pilarín Bayés.
The fair will offer 30 literary itineraries based on published works, with registration available online until two days before each itinerary. La Setmana del Llibre en Català promises to be a rich and diverse celebration of Catalan literature, offering a wide range of activities and opportunities for cultural discovery.
