The Barcelona International Jazz Festival is a world reference of the genre, thanks to its tireless work to offer a balanced program with first names and new proposals. Free concerts, master classes by leading figures, conferences, exhibitions, meetings with artists... and many parallel activities complete the program. The festival takes place in Barcelona's most emblematic music venues such as the Liceu, Palau de la Música Catalana, Apolo, Razzmatazz, Jamboree, L'Auditori and Luz de Gas.
About the 56th edition (2024-2025)
The Barcelona Jazz Festival has established itself as one of the most important jazz events in Spain. With 56 editions held over 58 years, it has marked a milestone in the history of jazz, bringing the world's greatest exponents of the genre, and betting on new trends and emerging talents both nationally and internationally. In addition to its contribution to the creation of a solid community of followers, its last edition attracted more than 85,000 spectators, with an occupancy rate close to 80%, placing it as the leading jazz festival in the country by number of paying attendees.
The 56th edition, which runs from October 10, 2024 to March 23, 2025, features a program that combines local talent with international figures and promising jazz artists. More than 60 concerts will take place on 17 different stages, in addition to offering 14 master classes, a unique format worldwide.
Outstanding artists
These are the most outstanding names of this year's edition:
- Brad Mehldau: A virtuoso pianist renowned for his approach to contemporary jazz, fusing classical and popular styles in his compositions and performances.
- Chris Potter: A renowned saxophonist known for his technical prowess and versatility in different genres, from traditional to modern jazz.
- Dave Holland: An influential British double bass player, appreciated for his ability to blend jazz with elements of classical and avant-garde.
- Fred Hersch: Pianist and composer, noted for his melodic sensibility and contributions to the evolution of jazz over several decades.
- Joe Lovano: A tenor saxophonist, famous for his melodic style and ability to improvise, who has left a significant mark on the international jazz scene.
- John Scofield: Innovative guitarist, known for his ability to fuse jazz with funk, rock and blues, creating a unique and modern sound.
- Kamasi Washington: Saxophonist and composer, who has gained popularity thanks to his eclectic approach, combining jazz with genres such as hip-hop and soul.
- Maria Schneider: Conductor and composer, famous for her orchestral approach to modern jazz and her ability to weave emotional narratives into her compositions.
- Michel Camilo: Dominican pianist, renowned for his impeccable technique and his fusion of jazz with Latin rhythms, making him one of the greats of Latin jazz.
- Mulatu Astatke: Pioneer of Ethio-jazz, combining traditional Ethiopian music with modern jazz, creating an innovative and profoundly influential sound.
- Paquito de Rivera: Cuban musician, clarinetist and saxophonist, who has stood out for his ability to fuse jazz with classical music and Latin rhythms.
- Pat Metheny: Prolific guitarist and multiple Grammy Award winner, who has explored a wide range of styles within jazz, from bebop to jazz fusion.
- Shabaka: British multi-instrumentalist and composer, a leader in the experimental and avant-garde jazz scene, combining jazz with African and Caribbean influences.
- Zakir Hussain: World-renowned tabla master and percussionist, renowned for his ability to fuse Indian classical music with jazz and other contemporary musical forms.
Local talent and "De Cajon!"
The Festival is firmly committed to local talent with outstanding artists such as Rita Payés, who will be the star of the "Retrat d'Artista" with five concerts. Also present will be figures such as Andrea Motis, Silvia Pérez Cruz with Juan Falú, Barcelona Jazz Orchestra, Sant Andreu Jazz Band, and Chicuelo with Marco Mezquida, among many others.
In addition, the flamenco series "De Cajón!" brings artists of the caliber of Israel Fernández, Miguel Poveda, Tomatito, Vicente Amigo, Yerai Cortés, Alba Carmona and María José Llergo, fusing flamenco with jazz to offer a diverse and high quality musical proposal.
