The exterior of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar (1329-1383) offers a compact look that does not convey what we will find inside. It is the most faithful representative of the austere Catalan Gothic style and has been long considered as the cathedral of seafarers. And no wonder, the parishioners of the port area and the Ribera quarter were the ones who contributed with their money or with their work. Apparently, the whole population of the Ribera quarter participated in the construction and especially the unloaders of the docks, who were called “galafates” de la Ribera or “bastaixos”, reason why the main door of the Basilica pays homage to them.

The Santa Maria del Mar has suffered several disasters: In 1379, when the fourth tranche of vaults were about to be finished, the scaffolding caught fire and the stones suffered a considerable damage. Later, the 1428 earthquake caused the collapse of the rosette, causing some deaths. And finally there was a fire on 3 and 4 August 1936 caused by anarchists and communists who stormed the temple (like other churches in Barcelona).

Hi! What time should we arrive if we are planning to attend the International Mass (Noon) on May 26, 2024? We want to ensure we have a seat. There will be four of us.

Hello! Could you tell me what the mass schedule is for Christmas Eve 2023? And don’t need tickets in advance?

Many thanks!

Hello Meghan,

You don't need to pay to go to a mass, nor the one of the Gallo (Christmas eve). Regarding the time, keep in mind that before the mass, El Canto de la Sibila, a medieval piece of religious theater, is performed. Normally, El Canto de la Sibila starts at 7:30 pm and the Misa del Gallo at 8:00 pm.

Best wishes from Barcelona

Hello Ceci,

At the moment we do not have information about the Easter masses in the Basilica of Santa del Mar. On April 2 the blessing of Ramos is scheduled to be celebrated (11:45 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.) and on April 7 rl Stations of the Cross (10:00 a.m.).

Best wishes,

Hi there!

Anyone know how much entry to Misa de gallo is on Christmas Eve? And how early to get there for a decent view of the service?

Hi there,

I will be with my family (husband, 2 daughters ages 10 and 7) visiting Barcelona during Christmas and would like to attend a mass. What is the schedule for 12/24 and 12/25 at Santa Maria Del Mar? Also, how long will the mass be and will there be any choirs? Thank you!
