The Songs of the Sibyl are an ancient liturgical and cultural tradition that is celebrated in several towns in Catalonia, including Barcelona, especially on Christmas Eve. It is a prophetic chant of medieval origin that announces the Last Judgment, based on texts attributed to the mythical figure of the Sibyl, a prophetess of classical antiquity.

The Song of the Sibyl is not only a religious expression, but also a living testimony of medieval history, music and beliefs in the Mediterranean. Its preservation and staging in Barcelona reinforce the value of traditions as a bridge between the past and the present.

Origin and history

The Chant of the Sibyl has roots in medieval Christianity, although it is based on the reinterpretation of pagan elements. It became popular in the 11th century in different Mediterranean countries, but was banned at the Council of Trent (1545-1563) due to its link with elements that were not strictly Christian. In Mallorca and some areas of Catalonia, however, it survived as a religious tradition.

In Catalonia, the chant was recovered at the end of the 20th century thanks to the interest in musical and cultural heritage. In 2010, Unesco declared the Chant of the Sybil as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Characteristics of the Song of the Sibyl

  • Lyrics: the lyrics, in Latin or Catalan, are a solemn text describing the coming of the Last Judgment, with a message of warning and repentance.
  • Melody: it uses a simple and monodic Gregorian chant, which highlights its mystical and transcendental character.
  • Interpretation: it is usually interpreted by a child or a woman, dressed in a tunic and cloak, and carrying a sword that she or he raises at key moments of the interpretation.
  • Scenography: In some versions, the ceremony includes the use of incense and lights to reinforce the solemn atmosphere.
