L'Alternativa - The Barcelona Independent Film Festival defends the creative independence of the auteur and scours the current panorama in search of the most original and committed cinema. L'Alternativa is also characterized by supporting young emerging creators and paying tribute to those who have driven the evolution of cinema.
L'Alternativa is divided into three sections: L'Alternativa Official, which is divided into three competitive subsections (National, International Feature Films, and International Short Films); L'Alternativa Parallel, where you can see tributes, premieres, works by little-known filmmakers and new creators, and a family program; and L'Alternativa Hall, which takes place in the CCCB Hall and offers a diverse program with screenings, performances and debates. In addition to screenings, L'Alternativa Activities offers masterclasses, workshops and other activities related to the world of cinema. Lastly, L'Alternativa Professionals organizes the Professional Days and the Mentoring Projects.
The 2024 edition of L'Alternativa
The Barcelona Independent Film Festival, l'Alternativa, celebrates its 30th edition this year. For the past three decades, it has provided opportunities to explore and enjoy screenings and events that celebrate filmmakers' creative independence, diversity, innovation, freedom, engagement and reflection. Let's take a look at the keys to this edition:
- Mexican film director Nicolás Pereda will be one of the great protagonists of this new edition of L'Alternativa. Pereda will screen most of his feature films and some of his short films, will hold a meeting with the audience and will give a practical workshop on epistolary cinema.
- The special sessions will feature the Catalan premieres of new works by Nicolas Philibert (Averroès & Rosa Parks and La machine à écrire et autres sources de tracas), Sergei Loznitsa (The Invasion) and Anna Cornudella (The human hibernation).
- Isaki Lacuesta, Isabel Herguera and Mauro Herce will star in this year's three Satellites, a section of the festival in which filmmakers close to the festival show us their work and share their creative process in an activity open to the public.
The spaces
The 31st edition of l'Alternativa will take place from November 14 to 24 at various venues around the city. The Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) will continue to be the festival's main venue, in collaboration with the Filmoteca de Catalunya and the Maldà cinemas. In addition, part of the program will be available online at Filmin from January 2025, for a limited time.
