The International Museum Day

International Museum Day (IMD) is celebrated annually on May 18; it has been organized since 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and aims to raise awareness of the important role of museums in the development of society. During the IWD museums organize a large number of activities that take place on May 18 itself, although they can also start before or end after that date. The most attractive events of the IWD are the open days that the museums offer free of charge and the celebration of the the Night of the Museums.

The 2024 edition of the International Museum Day

The theme of this year's International Museum Day, "Museums for Education and Research," highlights the essential role of cultural institutions in providing a holistic educational experience and advocating for a more conscious, sustainable and inclusive world. Museums are dynamic educational centers that promote curiosity, creativity and critical thinking, contributing to research by providing a platform to explore and disseminate new ideas in areas such as art, history, science and technology.

Since 2020, International Museum Day supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on quality education and the promotion of industry, innovation and infrastructure. On IWD 2024, we are invited to rethink education and imagine a future where knowledge sharing overcomes barriers, and innovation meets tradition. Visit Barcelona's most important museums for free

On this day most museums in Barcelona can be visited for free, including the most important ones such as Picasso Museum, MNAC, Miró Foundation, MACBA and Tàpies Foundation. Temporary exhibition halls such as the CCCB and CaixaForum can also be accessed free of charge.
