Casa Batlló and Sónar, two major cultural institutions in Barcelona, have joined forces to offer an innovative music and visual arts experience created by internationally renowned artists.
THE CUBE, a world-leading audiovisual space located in the basement of Antoni Gaudí's iconic building, will open its doors on May 24 with the world premiere of "Music:Response," a vibrant audiovisual installation featuring reworked music by The Chemical Brothers and visuals by Smith & Lyall.
With THE CUBE, Sónar and Casa Batlló present a new narrative for audiovisual experiences, created with pixels, high-end audio and contributions from leading artists, creators and engineers. More than a space, we could speak of a blank canvas open to maximum creativity that transports attendees to the heart of the music.
This artwork features iconic characters and abstract visuals developed exclusively for THE CUBE space that experiment with feelings of tension and release. Inspired by the tradition of "Visual Music," it allows visitors to feel the transformative and liberating power of music.
Smith & Lyall comment, "We are delighted to premiere "Music:Response" at Casa Batlló because Gaudí illustrates the freedom of expression to which we aspire. Gaudí created fantasy worlds with his buildings, with their own rules and logic. They are immersive environments in which one has the sensation of being outside the normal world, an escape from reality into the sublime. The Chemical Brothers universe shares this same spirit and has also become a self-contained world."
